My wife and I have 2 children. I have learned so much while going through both pregnancies with my wife. One of the things that I heard very frequently while she was pregnant was that she should eat for 2. We also heard how easily the baby weight comes off after giving birth. In my mind I thought that soon after my wife gave birth her body would get right back to how it was prior to being pregnant. This could not have been farther from the truth. It takes a lot of work to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight. The saying that I have heard is that it took you 9 months to get to that point, and it will take another 9 months to get back to how you were prior to being pregnant. And now more information is coming out talking about how post pregnancy weight gain raises the risk of developing diabetes during the next pregnancy, and later on in life.This study, found in the June issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology, states that women who gain 12 to 17 pounds after giving birth are more than 2 times as likely to develope diabetes during their next pregnancy. Those who gain more than 18 pounds are 3 times more likely to develope diabetes during her next pregnancy. This study also stated that less than 10% of the women actually lost weight between the pregnancies.Diabetes during pregnancy is called gestational diabetes. It can be affected by hormonal levels and weight gain, but usually goes away after giving birth. Those who have had gestational diabetes are more likely to develope type 2 diabetes later in life. Gestational diabetes will also make the baby more likely to be obese and develope diabetes as they get older.The stresses put upon a new mother are great. Her body is changing and returning to normal. Even though the pregnancy is over her body’s hormonal levels are still different and fluctuating. Though it is hard to lose post-pregnancy weight, it is by no means impossible. Make sure to keep moving. Put your baby in a stroller or jogger and go for regular walks. Try not to snack. Breast feeding or nursing can help burn off some calories as well. The main aspect to focus on is trying to get back into exercising. Or if you have never exercised, now is the time to start. In my program I have a step by step process to get into exercise without injuring yourself. It is easy to buy small hand weights or dumbells and keep them in your house. Then you can exercise with your baby right there in the same room. You just have to know what you are doing. If you follow my program, you won’t have to worry about doing the right thing exercise-wise. You will get into shape and you will feel better. If you are a new mom, you are going to have to be in shape to chase around after your child as soon as they start crawling and then walking; and this happens usually within the first year of the child’s life. The alternative is not losing pregnancy weight, and all of the health issues associated with being overweight.
