Food can affect your mood, energy levels, and how you feel in general. There is evidence that eating right can even reduce the risk of certain types of cancers.
I feel that for overall effects, exercise is more important than eating right for overall health. But eating right is essential if you want to get the most out of your exercising. The two work synergistically to benefit your health. Just like the two work together to enhance your energy levels and to keep them constant and consistent throughout the day.
Carbohydrates have recently taken a hit, but they are the body’s primary source of fuel; and therefore the body’s primary source of energy. Whole grain carbohydrates can be very good for you. They can satisfy your appetite for many hours. They will keep your blood sugar levels constant which will provide you with a steady supply of energy that can last for hours.
Stay away from processed carbohydrates though, they are the ones that are bad for you. The processed carbs are the ones that will spike your blood sugar when they turn into sugar in your body. These are the ones that will make you more likely to get type 2 diabetes, heart disease, become obese, etc. Processed carbs are easy to spot, they are the white carbohydrates (pastas, breads, rice, etc).
Fiber is an important component to get in your diet. Fiber will help food pass through your body. The average person is carrying around 10 pounds of digested, impacted food in their colon. This digested food is sitting in the colon waiting to be excreted as feces. The more fiber you eat, the quicker this food will pass through you. This impacted, digested food will make you feel bloated, lethargic and can be bad for your health. The longer the food sits in your colon, the more it breaks down and becomes toxic. The more toxic it becomes, the more toxins you will absorb through your colon directly into your body. There has been speculation that this can make you more susceptible to cancer long term. This digested, processed food will sap your energy and make you feel lethargic. Good forms of fiber are: fruits and vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts, etc.
Breakfast can set your energy levels and mood for the day. Not eating breakfast will make you 70% more likely to becoming obese. This is because in the morning you are coming off of an 8 to 10 hour fast from when you were sleeping. If you skip breakfast then your body will think that a famine is coming and will go into a starvation/ conservation mode. The body will then store anything it eats, rather than burning through it as energy.
Eating a good, quality breakfast will set you up for hours with energy and put you in a good mood. A good breakfast will satisfy you for hours. It will keep you from getting hungry and lethargic by 10am. A good breakfast will get you going to the bathroom within 2 to 4 hours. Recently my wife and I have been making shakes for breakfast. My friend turned me onto a recipe called “the green monster”. It is awesome.
For a long time I have been hearing about juicing and how good it is for you. I have wanted to try juicing, but didn’t want to spend $500 on a juicer. The green monster recipe uses a blender, and is easy to make. You blend kale, banana, nut butter, blueberries, acai berries/ powder, cacao powder, and some almond milk together. It tastes great. It makes you feel great. The directions even say “drink it and feel amazing”, and you do after drinking it. It is action packed with vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are quickly absorbed into the body. It is a great way to get your greens in at the beginning of the day.
I am not a fan of energy drinks. They are full of sugar, calories and other chemicals that can be potentially harmful. They are basically sodas with extra chemicals thrown in for an extra intense sugar/ energy rush. The spike of energy they give is not long lasting. When you crash from these drinks, you crash hard. This will set you up to want to drink another energy drink to get your energy levels back up again. This creates a vicious cycle of dependence on the energy drinks. The cycle is good if you manufacture the drinks. But for the rest of us this cycle of being reliant on these energy drinks for energy is not good for our health, our pocketbooks or our energy levels.
Eating many small meals throughout the day is a better way to improve your energy and to keep your energy levels constant throughout the day. Exercise increases energy levels better than any energy drinks. Exercise makes it easier to be active and burn energy.
Eating right and exercising will give you consistent energy throughout the day. The energy will be longer lasting and you won’t crash from it. There are no artificial additives and chemicals that you need to worry about with healthy eating and exercising. You don’t have to worry about what health effects the chemicals will have on you 5 years down the road.
Improve your energy levels through eating right and exercising. It is the safest, and best, way to get consistent energy throughout the day. It is easier on your body than any energy drink or dietary supplement. It is the Pain Free Way.
