Tips for Keeping your Joints Pain Free

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 50 million people are affected with osteo-arthritis.

Osteo-arthritis (OA) is a painful and limiting joint disease. It is progressive and gets worse over time. If not managed, then the affected joint will further degenerate as time goes on. OA is the breaking down, or degeneration, of a joint. This can happen from wear and tear, from repetitive motions, from trauma or injury. All of these things will cause OA in the long term.  Once you have OA, these issues will cause the OA to progress faster than it would otherwise.

There are many things that you can do to maintain healthy, pain and OA free joints. OA, pain and loss of motion is not an inevitability. If you don’t have OA you can prevent it. If you are already afflicted by OA, then there is a lot you can do to manage the joint and prevent the arthritis from progressing to the point of not being able to use the joint and having to get a joint replacement. Immune Boosting Foods

Our immune system is always in a delicate balance. If it doesn’t function enough then you will get sick easily and won’t be able to fight off illnesses. If it functions too much then you can end with an auto-immune disease. An auto-immune disease is when a certain component of your immune system becomes over active and attacks parts of the body as it would a bacteria or virus. This over-activity of the immune system can cause lots of damage to the body over time.

When your immune system is functioning properly, it is a marvelous thing that will fight off colds and infections and keep your body safe and functioning properly. When it is over acting or functioning improperly, the immune system can be extremely damaging.

With the immune system being so delicately balanced, sometimes it needs a boost. It can be depressed in some people. This means that it is still functioning but not at full strength. This could cause you to get sick easily and cause the sickness to last longer. You would be more susceptible to colds, flus, and other issues and they would last longer and be more severe with an underactive immune system.

It should be noted that if you have an auto-immune disease then your immune system will be over active. But it will be so active in one area that it will not be able to respond properly to attacks on the body in other areas. So having an auto-immune disease actually depresses the immune system functioning.

Sometimes it is necessary to boost your immune system. I take immune boosting supplements on a daily basis. This is because I believe that our bodies can use as much help fighting off the constant barrage from viruses and germs all day long.

Besides the foods recommended in the following article, I recommend some other supplements. Glutamine is a phenomenal immune boosting supplement. Glutamine is an amino acid that is naturally produced by the human body. 70% of our immune system is located in our gut. That is where our bodies come into the most amount of contact with outside or exogenous materials. Glutamine helps to decrease the permeability of our guts which prevents germs from getting into our system from our gut.

Glutamine also boosts the immune system functioning after exercise. After exercise your immune system is decreased anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. This makes you more susceptible to getting sick the first half hour to an hour after exercise. If you take some glutamine right after exercise it will decrease your chances of getting sick. I always make sure to take glutamine if I have just exercised and am going to be somewhere public right afterwards.

Another thing I recommend for boosting your immune system is a netti pot. A netti pot is something that has been around for thousands of years. It is a staple of  ayurvedic healing. The netti pot is a small tea pot that you fill with a warm saline solution (a mixture of salts and other natural additives). You then put one end of the tea pot in a nostril, lean over a sink and tilt your head and let the water run through the one nostril, into your sinuses and out the other nostril into the sink –ideally. Having water run through your sinuses takes some getting used to. But once you get used to it, nothing will clear out your head and sinuses like this will. It will prevent mucous and dirt from building up in your sinuses and becoming an infection. Flushing your sinuses with a saline solution keeps the sinuses moist and prevents them from cracking. When your sinuses get dry and crack, they become openings that allow germs and viruses to enter the body. Especially throughout the winter, when there is dry, hot air being recycled and pumped all over buildings and houses, it is essential to keep your sinuses moist.

Another simple solution to boosting your immune system is just washing your hands. Every time you touch a railing or a door knob or anything else in public you don’t know who had previously picked their nose and used that railing or door knob without washing their hands. Then you rub your eyes or scratch your nose and you transfer germs to your body. Don’t touch your face when you are in public and you won’t provide the germs, bacteria and viruses avenues into your body.

By following these simple tips and by eating the foods in the following article, you can boost your immune system. This will allow someone with a normally functioning immune system to not get sick as often ( 1 time every 1 to 2 years versus a few times a year). It will also allow someone with a depressed immune system to have decreased flair ups, less joint and muscle pain, less infections, colds, flus, upper respiratory infections, and so on. This is not to say that you will not have any flair ups or get sick at all- you will. But just not as often as if you weren’t doing the immune boosting tricks.
