In the past, there have been issues with nutritional supplements not containing the ingredients they claim to contain.
Due to a loop hole in a 1994 law spear headed by a senator who was sponsored by the supplement industry, dietary supplements do not have to get FDA approval.
Therefore, unscrupulous dietary supplement companies have been known to add fillers in many supplements such as sand. Continue reading Not All Supplements Are Created Equal
I am a big proponent of vitamins. I have long believed that we need supplemental vitamins to ensure optimal health.
Would it be better if we could get all of our vitamins and minerals and nutrients out of our daily food? Of course it would be. But most of us do not eat a healthy, well balanced diet.
Even if you do eat a healthy, well balanced diet, you can still benefit from supplemental vitamins.
I have a Master’s Degree in Nutrition. I eat a well balanced and healthy diet. I know about nutrition. But I still feel that I can benefit from supplemental vitamins. Continue reading Can Vitamins Harm?
I believe in the importance of taking vitamins. I believe that quality vitamins will enhance your health and help you feel better. They may take the edge off of aches and pains. They may give you a little extra hop in your step.
But vitamins are not a substitute for exercising or eating right. Vitamins are a supplement, they enhance your health. They will not create health from an unhealthy state. Continue reading Vitamins and Exercise
Scientists, nutritionists and all sorts of health care professionals have been debating the necessity of taking vitamins since vitamins were discovered.
Some health care professionals feel that you should be able to get all of your vitamins and minerals that your body needs out of the food you eat on a daily basis. Others feel that you should only take vitamins or minerals if you have a specific health issue that require certain vitamins to heal or if an illness has depleted your body of a certain vitamin. While this is true, it is not the whole picture. There is an epidemic of chronic, low grade inflammation going on in our society. Many people have some type of inflammation going on in their bodies.
Chronic, low grade inflammation, while not severe, will irritate disease process, sprains/ strains, tendonitis, bursitis, anything ending in -itis (pancreatitis, bursitis), anything inflammatory (irritable bowel), to name a few issues it exacerbates. It is my opinion that chronic, low grade inflammation exacerbates almost every problem throughout the body. Inflammation will not create an issue, but it will certainly make it worse. I ran one marathon about 10 years ago. I will never run one again.
I now regularly compete in 50 to 100 mile mountain bike races. I enjoy them (as much as you can enjoy an all day suffer fest) and feel that they help motivate me to stay in shape, and they are a good, positive outlet for my competitive nature.
That is why I was interested when recent information came out talking about how too much exercise can be bad for you. The information was published in an editorial in the British medical journal Heart. Continue reading Is Too Much Exercise Bad For You?
Anti-aging is a very popular topic. There are so many gimmicks out there claiming to reduce wrinkles and cellulite. They promise that you will look and feel like you did 40 years ago and you won’t have to do anything except: eat specially formulated cookies or drink a shake, or take this fat burning and energy increasing capsule, or take a specific vitamin, or something else equally unrealistic. There is no miracle pill, and there is no substitute for exercising and eating right. Continue reading Anti-Aging Through Exercise and Healthy Living
If you ask 10 doctors if you should take a multi-vitamin, you will probably get 10 different answers. I have read many reports from doctors stating that it is not necessary to take a daily multi-vitamin. Many nutritionists say that if you are diligent about watching what you eat, then you don’t have to take a multi-vitamin.
A new study was just released that proves that taking a daily multi-vitamin will reduce the risk of cancer (most types except prostate) by 8 percent. Now 8 percent may not seem like much, but there are very few other changes you can make that will cut the risk of cancers by 8 or 10 percent. To put it in perspective, quitting smoking will decrease the risk of cancer by 10 percent. That 8 percent is not insignificant. I feel that any decrease in the risk of cancer is significant. Everyone knows they need to eat fruit and vegetables for a healthy, well balanced diet. Sometimes it can be hard to find fruit or vegetables that everyone in your house will eat. It can also be difficult to find the time to prepare fresh fruit or vegetables.
Chopping up fresh vegetables takes time. And if both partners of a household are working, it can be hard to find the time to properly prepare fresh vegetables.
Preparing fresh vegetables can be time consuming and difficult if you don’t know what you are doing. But if you do know what you are doing, you will be able to prepare fresh vegetable in a delicious way that doesn’t take hours to do. Continue reading Eating Fresh Fruit and Vegetables
