Yesterday I was lucky enough to start off my day in my favorite way. I slept in, prepared and ate breakfast with my wife and children, and then went for a mountain bike ride with a good friend of mine.
I love starting the day off with a ride through the woods. It gets my blood flowing. It wakes me up. It gets those feel good hormones (like adrenalin and endorphins) flowing which will keep me feeling good for the rest of the day.
Throughout the ride my friend and I were talking about how the choices we make eventually become our lifestyle. Many components of daily life all feed into how we feel during the day, and how we feel in general. Continue reading Choose Your Own Lifestyle
The only constant in life is change.
As we age, our bodies change. As we age, the demands put upon our bodies change along with how our bodies react to those demands.
It used to be that researchers looked at adulthood as one long, continuous stretch. Now we are realizing that our bodies change throughout adulthood. Therefore our body’s needs change as well, throughout adulthood.
I believe that the biggest difference as we age is that we don’t recover from injuries and insults to our bodies as quickly as we did when we were younger. Continue reading Age Appropriate Exercise
A vast majority of people at any given time want to lose weight. Unfortunately, few people have training in nutrition or exercise. Therefore, most of us don’t know what is valid and what is invalid and wrong when evaluating a weight loss, exercise, or nutrition program.
Unfortunately, there are many companies out there looking to take advantage of uneducated consumers who are desperate to lose weight.
Why else would something like aspartame still be legal and allowed to be used in so many different types of foods? Continue reading Artificial Sweeteners
There are charlatans, con-artists, and snake oil salesmen in every industry. In every profession there are practitioners who are trustworthy and reliable, and practitioners who would take advantage of you any chance they get.
Anywhere there is a possibility to make money, there will be those who are trying to take advantage of the system to make money. Continue reading If It Sounds Too Good To Be True, Then It Is, part 2
It is everywhere. We are bombarded by it all of the time. It affects our views of what health is and how we should exercise, eat and take care of ourselves. It is society’s view of what is beautiful.
We are bombarded constantly by images of celebrities and models who are paid to look good, be thin and in good shape. These people have a staff of people who they pay to keep them looking good.
If most of us had our own personal trainer, personal chef, personal assistant, and others, it would be much easier to stay in shape, and to look good. Continue reading Exercise To Feel Better, Not To Get Skinny
I have spent many years working in health care, with physical fitness, exercise, proper nutrition and personal trainers. You hear and see it all when you spend time around gyms and around athletes exercising and training.
I have seen the empty, used packets of human growth hormone in gym bathrooms. I have seen the gym bunny who wears makeup to work out and then spends most of her exercise time talking and being social. Continue reading Do Men Lose Weight Faster Than Women?
According to the CDC, more than 1/3 of all Americans over the age of 20 are overweight. Consumers are projected to spend 66 billion dollars in 2014 on diet products and memberships.
With that many people spending that much money, there is bound to some fraudulence associated with this market. 13% to be exact.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently fined Sensa Products, L’Occitane, HCG Direct and LeanSpa for defrauding their customers. These companies must refund $34 million to their swindled customers. Continue reading If It Sounds Too Good To Be True, Then It Is (The Diet and Exercise Industry)
A recent gallup poll showed that 56% of all people want to lose weight. That being said, 56% of all people don’t necessarily need to lose weight.
My perspective is that it is more important to be healthy than it is to reach a societal ideal of weight. It is more important to feel good than it is to look good. There are many ways to lose weight quickly that are very unhealthy, and can do harm to your body.
There are many weight loss programs/ lose weight quick schemes that prey on people who are desperate to lose weight. They boast that by using their program you can lose weight and look like a movie star or model. Continue reading How To Fit Exercising And Eating Right Into Your Life
Multi vitamins have been around for decades, if not centuries. Debates about multi vitamins effectiveness have been around just as long.
Multi vitamins are nutritional supplements. This means that the vitamins are meant as a supplement. They are intended to supplement a healthy lifestyle.
They are not meant as a substitute for eating right or exercising. A multi vitamin will not replace healthy eating or exercising. A multi vitamin will enhance a healthy lifestyle. Continue reading Are Multi Vitamins A Waste Of Money?
Most people associate exercise with intensity and with pain. The saying “No pain, no gain” has been deeply ingrained into our psyche. It has been ingrained to the point that it is hard to know when to back off, and when to work through an injury.
I know what I am doing exercise-wise. I have been exercising consistently for over 20 years and I am a doctor of chiropractic who specializes in muscles and muscle injuries. And I still have a hard time knowing when to back off from exercising, and when to work through the pain. Continue reading Are Extreme Exercise Routines Right For You?
