Anti-aging, as a term, or concept, is thrown around very easily these days.
It can be used as an adjective, like “This hemorrhoid cream is amazing, it has anti-aging effects if applied to the face.”
This describes retin-A, a prescription hemorrhoid cream that was found to reduce puffiness and wrinkles in the face. The cream itself does not have anti-aging properties, it just makes one appear younger by temporarily reducing wrinkles.
It can also be used as a concept, in that eating healthy and exercising has anti-aging effects on the body. Leading a healthy lifestyle slows down the aging process. Continue reading Anti-Aging, or How to Age Gracefully
Many exercise systems push you to achieve your best. They want to help you get into the best shape of your life, and they will push you to get there.
They push you to look and feel better, get stronger, leaner, faster and harder.
Some people need someone pushing them constantly. Some people won’t work out unless they have someone pushing them to do it.
Other people, can’t be pushed when it comes to exercise. Some people, I believe most people, need gentle guidance when it comes to exercise and movement, when it comes to reducing pain and increasing activity. Continue reading Exercise Within Your Limitations
Over the last weekend the New York Times ran two articles on the current state of health insurance and how it is changing. Both articles pointed to the fact that it is becoming more and more important to take care of yourself and prevent injuries.
The first article was fascinating, and scary. The article reported that a local health insurance company was revamping the way it assesses risk and how it categorizes patients due to their perceived health risks. Continue reading Exercise And Eat Healthy To Avoid Reliance On Health Insurance
For many years the association between aging well and exercise has been known, but was never 100% proven. A study published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association that proved exercising helps to prevent age related decline.
Dr. Marco Pahor is the director of the Institute on Aging at the University of Florida and the lead author on the study. He said “For the first time, we have directly shown that exercise can effectively lessen or prevent the development of physical disability in a population of extremely vulnerable elderly people.” Continue reading Exercise To Age Well
When looking for a way to lose weight and get into shape, it is easy to become overwhelmed with all of the exercise, nutrition and weight loss programs available.
There are literally thousands of programs to choose from. Most programs advertise that they are the newest, quickest, best and only way to lose weight.
These programs advertise that they use scientifically proven ways to lose weight. Some claim to specifically target hard to lose areas such as the stomach and thighs. The problem is that there is very little about them that is scientifically proven. There is no way to target specific parts of the body for weight loss. Continue reading Getting Rid Of Fat Through Diet And Exercise
This debate has been raging for decades. Ever since there have been diet, weight loss, and exercise businesses, the debate has been going on. What is more effective for weight loss, eating right or exercising?
Eating right and exercising are both important for different reasons. Both are important for maintaining health. Both are also important for losing weight, and maintaining a healthy weight. Continue reading Diet or Exercise? Which Is More Important For Weight Loss?
General Mills is one of the largest processed foods manufacturing companies in the world. Recently, they have been trying to arrange it so that no one can sue them.
They put a post on their website that said in effect that you can never sue them if: you visit their website, click on anything on their website, print any coupons off of their website, like their facebook page, or buy their foods.
They are effectively trying to say that if you do any of these actions then you forfeit your right to sue them, ever.
Why would they want that? Are they scared of large groups of people suing them? If so, why? Continue reading Processed Foods
A vast majority of people at any given time want to lose weight. Unfortunately, few people have training in nutrition or exercise. Therefore, most of us don’t know what is valid and what is invalid and wrong when evaluating a weight loss, exercise, or nutrition program.
Unfortunately, there are many companies out there looking to take advantage of uneducated consumers who are desperate to lose weight.
Why else would something like aspartame still be legal and allowed to be used in so many different types of foods? Continue reading Artificial Sweeteners
For many years I have felt that weight is not a determining factor of overall health.
People can be fat and fit, just like they can be thin and unhealthy. Your overall health and well being will be influenced more by whether you exercise, eat right and take care of yourself, rather than if you are thin or heavy. Continue reading Skinny Fat
I have read about it and discussed it numerous times. I highly recommend it. “It” is eating breakfast.
I have long been a proponent of eating breakfast. When discussing the topic with patients I always mention a study that concluded that those skip breakfast are 80% more likely to become obese than those who do eat breakfast.
From what I have read from studies, and what I have observed anecdotally, breakfast sets the stage for how we feel throughout the day. Eating breakfast can affect concentration, focus, energy levels, food cravings, and more throughout the day. Eating breakfast can set us up for having a lethargic, hum drum day or having a high energy, feel good day. Continue reading Is Breakfast The Most Important Meal Of The Day?
