Losing 3500 Calories Does Not Equal 1 Pound

Just like one calorie does not equal another calorie, losing 3,500 calories does not equal to losing a pound.

A calorie of broccoli is not the same as a calorie of potato chips. The calorie of broccoli is more nutritious; it has more vitamins and minerals and nutrients than the calorie of potato chips.

You can survive longer on broccoli than you can on potato chips. Continue reading Losing 3500 Calories Does Not Equal 1 Pound

Sugar Withdrawal

There is such a thing as sugar withdrawal.

In a study performed by Carlo Colantuoni and colleagues at Princeton University back in 2002, it was observed that rats, when deprived of food for 12 hours would binge on sugar instead of natural food and then go into withdrawal.

The rats who were undergoing withdrawal suffered from chattering teeth, paw tremors, and head shaking.

Sugar has been called as addictive as any drug. Indeed it stimulates the same neurological pathways that highly addictive drugs like cocaine and heroin do. Continue reading Sugar Withdrawal

Recently big soda manufacturers pledged to cut the calories in their sugar laden soft drinks. While this may seem like a good idea, their motivations may not be completely altruistic.

Consumers have been growing larger and larger as our society’s obesity epidemic has been reaching epidemic proportions. Many consumers are now demanding lower calorie alternatives to their favorite foods and  beverages.

But watch out, diet is not all that it is cracked up to be. Continue reading Is Diet Better Than Regular?

If it sounds too good to be true, then it is. This theory is once again proven true when concerning the diet and exercise industry.

Recently Dr. Oz was scolded by Senator Claire McCaskill, chairwoman of the Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Insurance. Dr. Oz was scolded for assertions that he made on his show concerning weight loss products that have little to no scientific evidence backing up their effectiveness. food pyramid

For years it has been a common misconception that a calorie is a calorie. If you eat one type of food that is 300 calories, it will affect you the same as any other type of food that contains 300 calories, was how food was looked at.

If this hypothesis were true, then a 300 calorie cookie would affect our body the same as a 300 calorie salad. We know that a cookie will not affect the body in the same way that a salad will. Continue reading Don’t Starve Yourself To Lose Weight, or Why Counting Calories Doesn’t Work

It is everywhere. We are bombarded by it all of the time. It affects our views of what health is and how we should exercise, eat and take care of ourselves. It is society’s view of what is beautiful.

We are bombarded constantly by images of celebrities and models who are paid to look good, be thin and in good shape. These people have a staff of people who they pay to keep them looking good.

If most of us had our own personal trainer, personal chef, personal assistant, and others, it would be much easier to stay in shape, and to look good. Continue reading Exercise To Feel Better, Not To Get Skinny

Do Men Lose Weight Faster Than Women?

core

I have spent many years working in health care, with physical fitness, exercise, proper nutrition and personal trainers. You hear and see it all when you spend time around gyms and around athletes exercising and training.

I have seen the empty, used packets of human growth hormone in gym bathrooms. I have seen the gym bunny who wears makeup to work out and then spends most of her exercise time talking and being social. Continue reading Do Men Lose Weight Faster Than Women?
