According to the CDC, more than 1/3 of all Americans over the age of 20 are overweight. Consumers are projected to spend 66 billion dollars in 2014 on diet products and memberships.
With that many people spending that much money, there is bound to some fraudulence associated with this market. 13% to be exact.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently fined Sensa Products, L’Occitane, HCG Direct and LeanSpa for defrauding their customers. These companies must refund $34 million to their swindled customers. Continue reading If It Sounds Too Good To Be True, Then It Is (The Diet and Exercise Industry)
A recent gallup poll showed that 56% of all people want to lose weight. That being said, 56% of all people don’t necessarily need to lose weight.
My perspective is that it is more important to be healthy than it is to reach a societal ideal of weight. It is more important to feel good than it is to look good. There are many ways to lose weight quickly that are very unhealthy, and can do harm to your body.
There are many weight loss programs/ lose weight quick schemes that prey on people who are desperate to lose weight. They boast that by using their program you can lose weight and look like a movie star or model. Continue reading How To Fit Exercising And Eating Right Into Your Life
Those of you who read my articles and blogs know that I like the Mediterranean diet. I do not like diets or dieting in general. But as a style of eating, I believe that the Mediterranean diet is without equal.
Dieting does not work because eventually you have to stop dieting. You can’t be on a diet forever. Usually once you do stop dieting, all of the weight you lost comes back. This is because you haven’t learned how to eat properly or healthy. Your old eating habits are the ones that caused you to gain weight in the first place. As soon as you go back to your old eating habits, you will gain the weight back that you lost. Continue reading Another Study Proves The Benefits Of The Mediterranean Diet
I have worked in the health care industry going on 14 years now. There are many myths floating around concerning health.
As many myths as there are surrounding health care, there are even more that surround the weight loss, diet and physical fitness industries.
A major myth associated with the dietary industry is that you can lose a lot of weight quickly through a few major changes to your diet, and it will stay off. Continue reading Thin Does Not Equal Healthy
Weight loss is hard even when you do everything right. It is hard enough when you are exercising consistently and eating right.
If you gain weight when you are not exercising and eating right, then it is easy to understand why you gained weight. But what if you were exercising and eating right consistently and still gaining weight? Here are a few reason for unexplained weight gain.
The main reason why I see for unexplainable weight gain is stress. Usually in times of stress, exercise and eating right go out the window because there is no time.
This is unfortunate because exercise and eating right helps your body to cope with stress better. It helps your mind to cope with stress better as well. Continue reading Weight Loss Obstacles
There is no magic bullet for weight loss. There is no substitute for exercising and eating right when it comes to weight loss.
It is an on going battle. One that is never one. Once you lose weight, you still have to work at keeping it off.
I exercise almost daily to keep myself in shape, and to keep weight off. I know that if I stop exercising and stop watching what I eat, I will gain weight. Continue reading No Magic Bullet for Weight Loss and Exercise
It is very hard to lose weight. On average most people will put on 1 to 2 pounds per year. Over 20 years that can add up to 20 to 40 extra pounds, if not more.
Even though it usually takes many years to gain weight, our quick fix society leads us to believe that we should be able to lose that 20 to 40 pounds in one month, or even one week. And if we cannot lose the weight that quickly, then something is wrong with us.
That is just not the case. Get thin quick schemes don’t work. Just like get rich quick schemes don’t work. If they did work, then everyone would be thin and rich. Continue reading Losing Weight, and Why Get Thin Quick Schemes Don’t Work
It is hard to loose weight. It can be even harder if you are sabotaging your weight loss without even knowing it.
It is different if you have gained weight and have not been exercising or have been eating badly. But what if you have been consistently exercising and watching what you eat, but you haven’t been able to lose weight or you have been gaining weight.
There can be many causes of unexplained weight gain. It can be due to medications that you may be taking. It can be due to increased amounts of stress. It can be due to hormonal imbalances. Unless you know what to look for, it can be very hard to figure out why your weight loss is plateauing or even increasing. Continue reading Hidden Causes of weight Gain
It seems like every week there is a new diet or exercise program that is touted as being the best way to lose weight and get into shape. It may claim that a new scientific breakthrough led the researchers to discover a new way to lose weight or to discover a new compound or plant that will revolutionize how people lose weight. These programs make promises like “lose 20 pounds in 1 week” or “get ripped, lean and in shape within 1 month”.
Most of these programs come with personal testimonies and before and after pictures. The testimonies are amazing, they talk about how great the diet is and how easy it was to lose weight and how much weight they lost. They may say things like “the weight just melted off” or “I lost weight by just sitting in my favorite chair”. The before and after pictures that accompany these testimonials show amazing differences. The program will promise that it is too good to be true.
Unfortunately, it is too good to be true. The old saying “if it seems to good to be true, then it is” is very true when dealing with the diet, nutrition, exercise and weight loss industries. Continue reading Don”t Believe The Hype (if it sounds too good to be true, then it is)
Starting a new exercise routine can be daunting. There is so much information out there about exercise.
If you can keep a few key components in mind, exercising can be simple and easy to get into.
You always want to start out slowly. Start out too slowly. You will be surprised at how sore you will get from doing very little if you haven’t exercised in months. If you haven’t exercised in over 4 months, you have to start back at ground zero. You will hurt yourself if you exercise too hard at the beginning. Continue reading Getting Into Exercise
