The Benefits of Early Morning Exercise

yoga 2Many people don’t get enough sleep. Even if you do get enough sleep, it can be very hard to find the motivation to wake up at an hour early to exercise.

If you have kids, I think the only time to realistically be able to fit exercise in, is in the morning before the kids get up and going.

Even if you don’t have kids, there are many benefits to morning exercise.

First off, you get your workout in and out of the way. You feel a sense of accomplishment for having completed your workout. And whatever unexpected events happen later on in the day, will not prevent you from exercising.

I can’t tell you how many times I have gotten ready to exercise, or go for a bike ride, get onto the trail for 5 minutes, or just warm up to begin lifting weights and I get a call that I have to pick my kids up. Or something happened at work that I have to take care of immediately. If you exercise first thing in the morning, then nothing later on in the day will prevent you from exercising.

Studies show that after exercise, you are much better able to pay attention, focus, concentrate, and remember things better. In his book “Spark”, John Ratay refers to exercise as miracle grow for the brain. Exercise causes the release of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) in your brain. HGH aids in the laying down of neurological pathways that become memories. It actually helps you to create memories.

Exercise also flushes your brain with oxygen which helps it become more aware. It gives your brain more fuel to work with. When I wake up tired and lethargic, if I exercise I feel much more awake and aware afterwards. I feel more relaxed,  stable and focused and ready to deal with the stresses of the day.

In Spark, Ratay reports on studies done on school aged children. The studies proved that children that exercised before school performed better on tests then children who had no physical activity.

Exercising in the morning will rev your metabolism for the rest of the day. You will have more energy throughout the day. You will not store as much food as fat, since you will burn through it faster.

If you work at a desk all day, as most of us do, it is essential to offset all of the sitting throughout the day. Exercise will help your body and mind to better deal with sitting all day.

You can’t just sit all day long and stare at a screen and expect to pay attention the entire day. Exercise will allow you to take advantage of the time you spend working. It can make the difference between taking 4 hours to complete a task versus 2 hours. Exercise will help you to be more productive.

It is much easier to exercise in the morning if you exercise at home. You can roll out of bed, go downstairs, and start exercising.
